Hunter Transmog: Challenge Mode Weapons

Consider this to be your 6-month warning. Like the Challenge Mode armor from Mists of Pandaria, the Challenge Mode weapons from Warlords of Draenor will probably be going away forever in the 7.0 patch.  I remember the mad rush for people to complete the MoP CMs in the final days leading up to 6.0. I knew people with the gold to spend on carries who couldn’t get it done in time because of the sheer demand those carry groups were under in the final days. So if you want these? Don’t procrastinate!

What’s more, it looks like Challenge Mode transmogs will be going account wide for the same class. So if you unlock this stuff on a Hunter, theoretically you should be able to use it on any Hunter on your account. For someone like me who only plays Hunters this is pretty cool news. There’s no word yet if the weapons you unlock will be usable on other classes though. For example, Hunters can buy almost all of the weapons (except for a few), but I’m not sure that means you could use the 2H sword on a Warrior alt (don’t count on it).

Fel Hunter transmogs (or more excuses to use the goggles)

Killing demons and fel orcs in Tanaan Jungle needs a transmog to fit the part. Today we’ll take a look at a couple fel-themed transmogs for Hunters.

The first one is rather simple, but I’ve been using it for most of 6.2. It’s the one featured above and it’s simply the season 1 Gladiator armor set, along with the fel goggles and the gun from Heroic Lei Shi.

Helm: Fel-Proof Goggles
Shoulders: Gladiator’s Chain Spaulders
Cloak: n/a
Chest: Gladiator’s Chain Armor
Hands: Gladiator’s Chain Gauntlets
Belt: Marshal’s Chain Girdle
Legs: Gladiator’s Chain Leggings
Feet: Marshal’s Chain Sabatons
Weapon: Taoren, the Soul Burner (Heroic version)

Everything sans the goggles and gun is purchased with honor points in Area 52, Netherstorm. If you don’t feel like farming up the honor for all these pieces, there is also Demonstalker Armor. Same model but the base armor is lighter in color. For that you’ll need to run some TBC raids.

I’ve put this set together in a Wowhead item comparison so you can quickly view it on other races in 3D (click the little triangle above the item icons).

Hunter Transmog: Spec Ops

I liked this transmog as soon as I laid eyes on it. This one was submitted by Shadowwolf of Zul’jin. Here’s what he had to say:

Originally designed on a Male Worgen using the Replica Coif and Dark Iron Gun, was going for a minimalist black/dark look. Modified them in WoD to include the Cybergenetic Mechshades for the night-vision goggle look.

Head: Cybergenetic Mechshades
Shoulder: Upstanding Spaulders
Chest: Avenger’s Armor
Belt: Blackforge Girdle
Legs: Leggings of the Insatiable
Boots: Veteran’s Chain Sabatons
Gloves: Gloves of Taut Grip
Weapon: Dagryn’s Discarded Longbow (LFR)

If you’re not an engineer, Shadowwolf suggests this or this as a helm replacement. For a gun instead of a bow, try this, this, or this.

Hunter Transmog: Green Machine

This set was built primarily around the heroic version of these shoulders, which drop in Dragon Soul. They have a really neat visual effect of spectral wolves flying out of them periodically (see below screenshot). For the rest of it, I just used the best greenish colored armor I had available.

Most of the main armor pieces are normal mode tier 15. Some of them have lookalikes available from other sources. The goggles do require engineering, but if you’re a hunter and not an engineer… what the heck are you doing? Switch professions stat!

Hunter Transmog: Howling Beast

The Howling Beast armor is the ultimate transmog for hunters who like the “wear what you kill” style of armor. I’m going to tell you up front that you need to get a gold medal in all 9 of the Mists of Pandaria challenge mode dungeons in order to earn it. If you’ve been thinking about getting this set, you will have to do so before the 6.0 patch drops and it is removed from the game. My guess is that means you have until about July-August, but that’s just a wild guess. It may seem insurmountable, but it’s definitely not. I previously wrote a couple of challenge mode guides at WoW Insider you may be interested in — Hunter specific, and a general getting started guide. In short, gear is not the barrier. Practice and finding a good team is.  Check out OpenRaid if you don’t have any friends interested.

A unique feature of the challenge mode armor sets is they all have visual effects that activate when you attack. In the case of Howling Beast, this manifests as flames coming out of the shoulders and a laser sight coming out of the helm.
