Taking cue from Delirium and Darkbrew, I’m going to have my own TBT (or Throwback Thursday) posts from time to time. Especially now, there’s really not much to talk about aside from the occasional alpha or beta build. Since I’m not actually in the alpha, I can only say so much about what I read in the patch notes. Whenever I get in, that should change, but for now the odd nostalgia post will help keep me busy.
My first post is about my first (and only) WoW machinima I did back in mid-2009. It was called Conquering Ulduar and it was a cinematic look at Ulduar 25 raiding. The concept was pretty simple: I’d turn off my UI, and then run around and film the raid at interesting angles while trying not to get killed. I was killed a lot as you might imagine. Some of this video was filmed from the perspective of my corpse or resurrected as a DK ghoul. My guild was kind enough to carry me as I did this filming. I was inspired to do this video by Jack (who is also a hunter!) and all of his cinematic WoW machinimas he’s been making since vanilla (I love those things).
Unfortunately, I was never able to get the footage for the second half of Ulduar and complete part 2. It was mostly due to the attendance boss, and other things happening in the guild I can’t even remember (we were progressing on Yogg 25 at the time). Interest in Ulduar was also dropping with the Trial of the Crusader raid. The only fight I recorded for part 2 was Freya. Pretty sure that footage is lost now (raw FRAPS stuff is just way too big).
On top of all those roadblocks, I decided on a whim to switch guilds and go Horde for a while. I joined a heroic progression guild and spent most of ToGC and ICC heroic with them. I’m still annoyed I was never able to finish this, but I do enjoy watching part 1 from time to time and I was proud of it. It was actually on the WarcraftMovies.com front page for a little bit. It got around 65k views there, a few more on YouTube as well. Back then, YouTube videos had a time limit so I had to actually split the damn thing up into chunks. Today, I re-uploaded it as a single chunk because I really dislike multi-part YouTube videos, and I wasn’t able to embed the WarcraftMovies version.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy it (or maybe even remember it from back in the day).
Great video! The work you put in shows. Did you film it during the Children’s Week event?
Nope, filmed this in late June or early July 2009 and children’s week was in May. The little kid you saw was the Argent Squire I believe.
Fantastic video. Looks like it took a lot of effort. Well done.
