Patch 7.2 Hunter Pet Preview: Feathermanes and Falcosaurs

Patch 7.2 is adding some new Hunter pets to tame including a whole new family. Falcosaurs are being added to the Raptor family. Gryphons, hippogryphs, wyvern, owlcats, and wolfhawks are being added to the new Feathermane family.

I know what you’re thinking: How am I supposed to tame new pets when my stable is already full? I’m right there with you. I dislike abandoning pets, especially rare ones, but it might be necessary in this case because having gryphon pets for my dwarf is too good to pass up.

Update June 2017: I have a guide on where to tame all the Feathermanes on Wowhead.

There is a little bit of hope regarding the stable situation:

Hopefully whatever the plan Muffinus is referring to is coming in patch 7.2. Update: It’s not. I also hope that they add special abilities to all the families without one (which was also hinted at a while ago), but there’s no sign of that yet.

The Hunter class mount, a Wolfhawk

Feathermanes

Feathermanes aren’t exotic, so all specs can tame and use them, but you won’t gain the ability to tame them unless you invest AP in Titanstrike. You won’t be able to tame them right when patch 7.2 drops either. There are several steps you must take before you unlock this ability:

  1. Achieve Broken Isles Pathfinder, Part 2, which unlocks flying in the Broken Isles. This is likely to take a few weeks at least. We’ll have to wait and see what kind of reputation grind there is.
  2. Complete the quest to unlock your class mount, in our case the Wolfhawk. This is a fun little solo scenario with Odyn at the Field of the Eternal Hunt.
  3. Unlock all of the main traits on Titanstrike, which allows you to purchase Tome of the Hybrid Beast for 10k Order Resources. Note this requirement only include the main traits being added in 7.2, not the 50 “infinite” traits. You can purchase additional tomes and send them to other Hunters on your account as this item is bind to account. MM and SV get different mount recolors for maxing their artifact traits instead of the tome (you can still earn these colors as BM, you just need to get all the traits for the other spec).

An Owlcat and Hippogryph

Beasts in this family

  • Gryphons
  • Hippogryphs
  • Wyvern
  • Owlcats
  • Wolfhawks

There are several previously-unused skins/colors that will likely be added for taming. As of this writing, a rare black gryphon in the Hinterlands (Jetwing) has already been discovered on the PTR. Jetwing flies high in the sky in the central part of the zone, so you must dismount up in the air, damage him, then survive the fall to tame. There is also a white one out there somewhere, and maybe more.

Gryphons, wyvern, and old world hippogryphs all have hover and flying animations, while the new Broken Isles hippogryphs walk on the ground once tamed. Owlcats bring us one step closer to taming Druids.

The only Wolfhawks found so far reside on the southern coast of Eye of Azshara, in 3 separate caves. Currently they fly/hover when idling or attacking, but stay on the ground while running (as seen below).

I was kind of hoping to have pterrordax, skyscreamers, and dread ravens added to a flying family like this. It seems like a good place for them, especially the dread ravens. But I’m sure one or more of them will become pets some day (5 years ago we wouldn’t have figured gryphons would ever be pets).

As for a special ability, Feathermanes get Updraft (same one that Rylaks have).

Visit Petopia’s Feathermane page for all the different looks.

Falcosaurs

You’ve probably seen these guys infesting the shorelines of the Broken Isles. Every color and mob is tameable in 7.2, with the exception of matriarchs (because they’re level 111). They’re being added to the Raptor family (which still doesn’t have a special ability as of this writing).

Petopia updated their Raptor page to show the new looks.

  1. I’ve wanted an owlcat since I first saw one in legion.
I’ve wanted a hippogryph since I first saw one, before I had rolled a hunter.
In vanilla. 7.2 is looking nice.

I got my Lightning Paw a few days ago too. Whee

  2. Wait, you just have to max 1 artifact weapon? I thought you HAD to max titanstrike to buy the tome? I’m confused.

    1. They’re not exotic pets, but I was under the assumption your mount was different based on spec. Apparently it’s not, and all hunters get the same color at first. Post is edited now.

So you can tame and use Feathermanes as SV/MM, but still need to invest in Titanstrike.

  3. I Have A Question. If You Get The Tome On One Character (Say My Blood Elf Hunter) Do I Have To Do It ALL Again For Another Hunter (Like My Tauren)? I Saw On Wowhead That The Tome Of The Hybrid Beast “Binds To Battle.net Account” But There Was No Mention Of That In The Posted Article.

    1. Good catch. I didn’t even notice that. So yes, you should be able to send it to other hunters on your account. You will have to buy a separate tome for each hunter (10k order resources).

      1. Thats Ok, I Dont Mind Grinding For Gold. I WOULD Mind Doing All The Quest Lines OVER And OVER Just To Get Some Sweet Pets On All My Hunters! Like The Dinomancy Tome For Direhorns.. You Gotta Quest Grind For EACH Hunter You Want To Get A Direhorn … 🙁 LOL

  4. I’m thrilled to hear that we may be getting more stable room! So many pets out there to tame. I’ve had to abandon my share of beloved pets over the years, too. They’re just pixels but I get attached to them 🙂 Really looking forward to taming some Feathermanes.

Thanks for the great article, Bendak!

  5. It’d be best to buy the tome after getting the class hall mount rather than doing Pathfinder, would it?

      1. Bah! Class hall campaign seems to be a better option, as I looked it up on WoWHead if you don’t believe me.

      2. So, it’ll be 11 weeks before hunters can tame any from this family because its tied to the class mount. That seems a bit excessive. Getting kind of sick of the massive time gating Blizz has been forcing on us more and more as time goes on.

  6. I might grab an owlcat on my main but ugh, I’d much rather they give some of the older families an appearance overhaul before they add even more families. I want an improved hyena, gdit. And hunters have been asking for more stable space since like, Cataclysm, and they still aren’t doing it, maybe? And yet there’s an item that upgrades battle pet storage to 1500 of the little buggers. We need more slots, Blizz!

  7. Oooo loving this! But I also wish we got the Wildrunners (the unicorn looking beasts in Asuna) that’d be awesome~!

  8. My only desire is to have two ravens as pets, with the newer model, that are the same size. Since alpha when Hati is essence swapped into one of these ravens, he appears battle-pet sized. I don’t want Papa bird and baby bird. I want two badass ravens as pets like Odin.

  9. Right now, I’m debatting whether or not I should make a feathermane either a hunter’s companion, a family pet for non-hunters, or both.

  10. Aren’t the Frayfeather subspecies in Feralas supposed to be extremely aggressive towards Horde and Alliance?

  11. so they are not BM BUT you have to have traits on Titanstrike which is BM weapon makes no sense blizztard does it again glad i canceled this game

  12. bonus stats is ok but not special abilities for non-exotics. exotic taming? what is it? a skill just for fashion? could be but only BM hunters should be able to have their pets use those abilities
