Hail Hydra! That seems to be the hunter mantra of the week. Everywhere I go, I see hunters sporting their newly tamed hydras. Arguably one of the coolest is Spirit of Atha, the ghost hydra.
This isn’t the first time I’ve tamed this elusive beast. I was one of those who tamed it back in Wrath of the Lich King when there was a bug that allowed hunters to tame it as a crocolisk pet. In my infinite wisdom, I abandoned it and regretted it ever since. It was only available for a short time before it was fixed. In my defense, we could only own 5 total pets back then. For a while it remained a crocolisk until Blizzard made a new hydra family just for this one pet in Cataclysm. That version of the hydra family had a crit buff, today’s Hydras have a mastery buff.
The Spirit of Atha is found in Sholazar Basin. It doesn’t exist naturally in the world, the only way to get it is to summon it via a quest.
The quest is called A Cleansing Song. Don’t worry if you’ve already quested in Sholazar as this is a daily quest. There are a couple of caveats though.
- You need to be aligned with the Oracles (instead of the Frenzyhearts)
- The daily quest only has 1/4 chance of spawning each day, so it could take you a while to find it. The NPC that gives it picks a random quest each day.
- It’s possible for someone else with the quest to summon Spirit of Atha for you. I was doing this for other hunters for a while myself.
- Simply use the quest item near the water at the northern lake in Sholazar and the Spirit of Atha will spawn.

Everyone can have one now, it has lost its cool factor
I tamed it back in Wrath and kept it (together with the ooze). I liked having it as a unique pet model almost no one else had (since most people that tamed it abandoned it ;)) but I’m happy for my fellow hunters to have a shot at the model.
I want that slim pet soooooo bad.
My guild couldn’t care less about the rare pets I tame, but while I was running around working on the quests to get the ghost hydra (I have a thing for see-through pets) I happened across King Krush. I had a free stable slot open, dismounted midair, popped Aspect of the Fox and started my tame. After all these years I finally have the best looking Devilsaur in the game. I wouldn’t have found him tonight if not for this post.
Thank you. 🙂
You’re welcome, and congrats! Awesome taming story, and epic use of Aspect of the Fox.
Here’s a screenshot just after the fact. Again, thank you!
…and just to make sure I wasn’t 100% on a lucky streak, I checked for Loque, but no luck there.
So I’m still waiting for the quest to get this hydra, but you’ll never guess who I ran into tonight while farming Saronite.
Wow, very lucky
spawns regardless of faction or quest now.
It was probably someone with the quest item summoning more of them. Because they stay there until tamed or killed.
