Pet of the Week: Sunwing

Sunwing is a level 51 rare Dragonhawk found in the Burning Steppes. It’s the only tameable Dragonhawk to use the black skin and is definitely my favorite. It’s fairly new to the game, just being added in patch 5.1. The Dragonhawk’s special ability is Fire Breath (magic vulnerability) and it looks like it’s staying that way for Warlords of Draenor.

Sunwing spawns at roughly 10,53 near Flamestar Post. If you are Alliance, this is only about a 30 second flight from Stormwind, so it’s very easy to check and see if he’s up. The respawn time seems to be around 4 hours, give or take. I see him up pretty frequently when I take trips to Blackrock Mountain.

Solo Warbringers for mounts and profit

I got into Zandalari Warbringer farming a few months ago when I was just looking for something else to do. I came for the mounts, and I stayed for the gold. Back in 5.2 when they were added to the game, they were camped 24/7 so I didn’t bother with them. Nowadays, I find them alive with regularity. I’ve made as much as 20,000 gold in a single day just from the stuff that these guys drop.

Hunters can solo them easily with a few simple tips. What prompted me to write this was seeing so many hunters fail at this. The Warbringers have hard-hitting abilities which can kill your pet very quickly, but if you know what abilities to watch out for, it’s a complete cakewalk.

New Hydra pet models

This new Hydra model was datamined from the latest Warlords of Draenor alpha build. I must say, these guys look pretty impressive. The first question many hunters had was… IS IT TAMEABLE? The answer is yes!

I found the pics and video on the Petopia forums and they were originally made available by InicoWc3 on YouTube. Below is a set of pictures for each color (I’m partial to the blue one myself).

Cloak and Quiver with Rogerbrown

It sure is nice to have a podcast dedicated to hunters once again. The third episode of Cloak and Quiver was just released, and it’s absolutely worth your time.  This week Solarflair interviews Rogerbrown from Method and they have a lot to say about the upcoming changes in Warlords of Draenor. I kinda wish it was even longer than this… I could listen to these guys chat about hunters all day. Be sure to follow @CloakandQuiver to hear about new episodes!

Hunter Transmog: The Gunslinger

This transmog was submitted by Fooque of Ner’zhul-US. He calls it the “Gunslinger” and here’s what he had to say about it:

This one begins with the “Straw Hat”. This hat can be purchased in any material once you reach exalted with The Tillers and achieve “Best Friends” with Old Hillpaw. I like things that are a little quirky so with my “Farmer” title I set out to find a proper farmer transmog. I wanted pieces that looked as “leathery” as possible. I also wanted to show off the red Lumberjack Shirt which required using a vest for the chest piece and minimizing the shoulders. After a number of trials, I settled on the Talhide pieces (same look as Netherstorm) for the bulk of the transmog. It’s all brown and leathery. I chose the Boneweave Girdle for the belt. It seems perfect with its big shiny buckle and the darker color syncs nicely with the darker brown of the shoulders and the hat.

I’ve always preferred bows but when I found how perfectly the Magnetized Projectile Emitter fit with the look, I had to go with the gun. The gold, reds and brown of the gun mesh nicely with the reds of the shirt and the gold trim throughout. And with the gun, the “farmer” look I had set out to create became a “gunslinger” look.

Having fun with Wowhead’s model viewer (and new gun models!)

Wowhead has updated their Warlords site to support the new character models in the 3D model viewer. So far the orcs, dwarves, and tauren male are supported. I’ve been having fun checking out some transmogs on the new dwarf model as I plan to race change my main hunter to that in 6.0.

The animations all seem very close to the originals with some slight tweaks. The biggest change, of course, is the facial animation quality. You can preview all of the various emotes and attacks for each character. The facial animations are in a completely different league compared to what we have now.

You can also preview some of the new armor and weapons, like this very strange looking gun below.

Pet of the Week: Gurubashi Riding Raptor

Raptors are one of the many pets getting ability and buff changes in Warlords of Draenor. Currently, the Raptor special ability is Tear Armor (Weakened Armor debuff), but in Warlords this will be changed to Strength of the Pack (5% crit buff) because that particular debuff is being removed (across all classes).

The Gurubashi Riding Raptor is found on the Isle of Reckoning in the northern tip of Kun Lai Summit and is probably my favorite raptor skin. It comes in orange and red. If you’re into the whole mount matching thing, they both have mount counterparts (Swift Orange Raptor and Armored Razzashi Raptor). As I have neither, the closest match for me was the Red Primal Raptor.

New Warlords screenshots show off Garrisons and zones

I pulled these from the PAX East press kit.  I think a couple were featured on the Warcraft twitter, but this is the first time I’m seeing these new Garrison screenshots (maybe I missed them). These look much better than the BlizzCon shots if you ask me. Those early shots seemed pretty barren — just empty land with buildings — while these make it look like a neat little town. Still just the Alliance version, but I’m sure they’ll reveal the Horde buildings soon enough. I’m pretty excited for this feature! Now if only they could grant my ridiculous hunter stable wish.

Also be sure to check out this interview from Wowhead where they talk a little more about Garrisons. Your Garrison can be attacked by NPCs and you’ll have to organize its defense with your followers. You can even bring in your friends to help you! There are rewards for successfully defending it (in other words, I’m pretty sure it’s optional and you could ignore it if you wanted).

A closer look at beast mastery hunters in Warlords

Update 8/22: This article is still mostly accurate but is slightly depreciated. It will give you a good overview of the  overall changes but you may want to view more recent posts under the Beast Mastery tag for more info and recent opinions.

If you missed it earlier, Blizzard released the first version of patch notes for the Warlords of Draenor alpha. I’ve summed up all the relevant hunter info in this post if you want to catch up. I’ve already taken a closer look at both survival and marksmanship, but today we’re focusing on beast mastery.

Overall, beast mastery looks like it’s going to see the least amount of changes in Warlords. Blizzard’s goal with the hunter changes was not to revamp the class, but to give each spec a better identity. Beast mastery already had its own identity as the pet-focused spec, but it looks like Blizzard is aiming to reinforce that even further.

Pet of the Week: Ban’thalos

Ban’thalos is one of the many challenge tames added back in patch 4.2. This level 85 spirit beast can be found in Hyjal, circling high above the Sanctuary of Malorne (around 28,62). The challenge to this tame is the sheer height Ban’thalos spawns at. You need to be able to get aggro and land on solid ground without killing yourself.

There are a couple of ways to pull off the tame, but first you need to have progressed the Hyjal quest lines up until you’ve unlocked the Molten Front daily quest area. If you haven’t yet, this quest will be available on your city’s “call to arms” board. Ban’thalos will be outside of your phase until you do this, along with Magria and Ankha who are also nearby.
